It came to me based on some folklore in the Internet Marketing world and some of the best tools I have used since I came online.</p>
<p>There are few underachieving nerd tubby guys from Australia out there that have the excellent reputation that one gentleman, who alternatively has been called a tubby nerd and describes himself as a country guy from Beechworth in the Australian state of Victoria. That fellow is a long time veteran trainer in the internet marketing community named <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/Ed_Dale_/2110/1">Ed Dale.</a></p>
<p>Ed is a friendly chap who is the master of self-deprecating humour, and was the founder of an Internet Marketing Training Program for new marketers called the Thirty Day Challenge. (30DC) He is also one of the collaborators with the perpetually good looking and cool surfer dude from San Diego,Frank Kern.</p>
<p>Ed has brought the free line forward in making sure newbies( new participants) get excellent grounding and  free education and do not get fleeced by scam artists. He is a gentleman of the first order and a fellow who shares freely his vast experience in order to change the lives of many others.</p>

<p>I went to my first book launch party last night for a first-time author, my friend  <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/AmberMac/2021/1">AmberMac</a> whose book which I have talked about in this blog . It was a pleasant affair with friends, family,colleagues and media personalities present. The book PowerFriending was being released yesterday in the United States and is an imprint of Portfolio Books, a division of Penguin Press.</p>
<p>There were several authors there including<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/_Rahaf_Harfoush/2021/2"> Rahaf Harfoush</a>, author of Yes We Did An Inside Look at How Social Media Built the Obama Brand and Jeremy Gutsche of <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/TrendHunter_com/2021/3">TrendHunter.com</a> <a rel="nofollow" class="zem_slink" title="Exploiting Chaos: 150 Ways to Spark Innovation During Times of Change" rel="amazon" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/Exploiting_Chaos/2021/4">Exploiting Chaos</a> 150 Ways to Spark Innovation During Times of Change. Rahaf had flown in from Geneva. The key point having read these books is that they all shared some information that provides value in the reader&#8217;s eye, they were timely, and were pertinent to my interests and were good reads.</p>
<p>Authors will tell you they do not make many dollars writing books. They use them to share and promote their expertise and content. This assists any author in building a tangible hook, to establish immediate credibilty and create further interest in their brand. Interestingly enough the three authors I have mentioned are all top keynote speakers for conferences,conventions and the like and are represented by the global speakers bureau <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/The_Lavin_Agency/2021/5">The Lavin Agency</a>. All of these authors are also engaging and are appreciated by their audiences.</p>
<p>They all have  day jobs and these speaking engagements help to make them more visible across many more markets and locations . If you have an expertise and have a publisher this is one of the fastest ways to promote your brand. Are you doing it?</p>

<p>I was visiting a new store in The  Shops of Don Mills  in Toronto yesterday called <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/McEwan/1947/1">McEwan</a>.  It is a destination location for foodies, and I am an unabashed foodie.  The store is the creation of Toronto chef and Food Network Canada personality <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/Mark_McEwan/1947/2">Mark McEwan</a> and it is a gleaming,silver market, selling fresh foods to go,groceries,meat,fish,produce and cooking paraphenalia.  It reminded me a bit of Fauchon in Paris or the food hall at Harrods in London on a bit smaller scale. It was a very pleasant experience and I will come back again and again due to the quality,value and experience. </p>
<p>My sweetie bought me a little treat.<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/_A_Mo_s_Bacon_Bar_85gr_/1947/3"> A Mo&#8217;s Bacon Bar (85gr)</a> by <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/Vosges_Chocolate_of_Chicago/1947/4">Vosges Chocolate of Chicago</a>.  She knows I love Applewood Smoked Bacon as well as Chocolate.  What a unique and memorable confection. And I was fascinated by the box that this bar came in. McEwan was unforgetable, due the outstanding quality and selection, but this chocolate bar stood out to me more than a lot of products I have consumed. It told me a story.</p>
<p>On the back of the bar this was printed along with a picture and bio of the chocolatier<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/_Katrina/1947/5"> Katrina</a>, the usual nutrition facts and UPC Code:<br />
&#8220;Bacon &#038; Chocolate&#8221;<br />
I began experimenting with bacon and chocolate at the tender age of 6,while eating chocolate chip pancakes drenched with Aunt Jemima® syrup as children often do.   Beside my chocolate-laden cakes lay 3 strips of sizzlin bacon,just barely touching a sweet pool of maple syrup. And then, the magic- just a bite of the bacon was too salty and I yearned for the sweet kiss of chocolate and syrup- so I combined the two.  This was a turning point;on that plate something magical happened, the beginnings of a combination so ethereal and delicious tht it would haunt my thoughts until I found the medium to express it-chocolate.</p>
<p>From there,it was just a matter of time, and what began as a love of salt and sweet quickly unravelled into an obsession. No longer could I wait to unveil the royal coupling in solid bar form,a deep milk chocolate with bits and pieces of applewood smoked bacon and  just a sprinling of Alder salt. Really, what doesnt taste better with bacon?</p>
<p>Peace,love and chocolate, Katrina&#8221;</p>
<p>Directly below this an instruction on how to eat the bar. A sentence ,primal in nature, evoking sensuality and lust.</p>
<p>&#8220;Breathe..engage your 5 senses, close your eyes and inhale deeply .Be in the present moment, notice the colour of the chocolate,the glossy  shine. Rub your thumb over the chocolate bar, to release the aromas of smoked applewood bacon flirting with deep milk chocolate. Snap off just a tiny piece and place it in your mouth,let the lust of salt and sweet coat your tongue.&#8221;</p>
<p>I have yet to see a product that did such a good job of drawing me in to the experience and the mood. The message was truly memorable, the chocolate everything and more. Yum-O</p>
<p>The lesson here is that it does not take a great deal of space to  clearly outline your difference from your competitors. Your written elevator speech can be that story and your hook.  Now lean back close your eyes and think&#8230;.</p>

So I saunter on over to my local Starbucks where I go regularily. I want my morning fix.</p>
<p>I am standing in front of my happy, smiling local barrista and she asks me what I want today? On the counter staring at me is a cute hand drawn sign by Candice telling me her favorite is a  peppermint chocolate chip frappucino®. I look up and the blackboard tells me that I can choose  what I want, in My Frappucino® .</p>
<p>I make my choice, and Candice writes my name on the cup,repeats my order to her partner , I pay with my Starbucks card and head on down the counter to await My Frappucino. A smiling face serves it to me and repeats my name and my choice.</p>
<p>Seems like a simple story. WRONG. This is one of the most carefully executed marketing plans that I have seen since Burger King did it&#8217;s Have it Your Way campaign.</p>
<p>I have a need and Starbucks® not only just gives me a coffee but it upsells the price point to me with me <em>not even feeling the upsell</em>, versus &#8220;Do You Want Fries With That?&#8221;. It has moved me up the price chain, and personalized my experience with startling precision. It has also reinforced me in my decision by repeating my name and my choice. Think about it.</p>
<p>What is taking place here is an example of a carefully planned and executed marketing strategy  because Starbucks® thinks about their customer experience and trains on execution.  Are you doing that in your business? Is every customer interaction something that makes your buyer feel listened to and satisfied with their experience ? If not make sure you review your marketing system so that your customer experience is differentiated  and then execute on your strategy relentlessly and thoughtfully according to plan.</p>

If you are like most small business people it is the need for a steady flow of good customers and the rewards, both financial and satisfaction that it brings.</p>
<p>I got to know John from his original book Duct Tape Marketing  and from his <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whatsmyspin.com/goto/podcast_on_the_Itunes_platform/1834/1">podcast on the Itunes platform</a>. That encouraged me to get to know a bit more about this easily understood, practical marketing pro and to consume more of his useful information.  The Referral Engine-Teaching Your Business to Market Itself is his latest work.</p>
<p>I agree with Seth Godin,the marketing guru of our time, when he says on the covernotes &#8220;This book will pay for itself in one day&#8221;.</p>
<p>John goes through a physiological explanation of why we are hard wired already to make  referrals. &#8220;We register pleasure in doing good and being recognized for it, and it&#8217;s home to the need to belong to something greater than ourselves. This is the social drive for making referrals.&#8221;</p>
<p>Why you need this book is simple; while businesses get referrals the majority of them do not have a system for doing it.  It is the system and its implementation  for referral creation that generates overwhelming success.</p>
<p>John is after all, a systems driven guy himself in how he conducts his own marketing business and it is this simple adherence to marketing systems that  will help the reader achieve success.</p>
<p>I am struck throughout the book about how he practices what he preaches with highlights to other successfull marketers and clients that he has come across as a way to highlight his messages. Along this same line he talks to the need to give more than you get and outlines the effectiveness that this has, both short term and ling term.</p>
<p>By choosing your market differentiation as a service or product provider you can stand out and be the source of value for the customer through content,in providing solutions for their needs as well as being their trusted source of information on a regular basis.</p>
<p>The book gives you the basis for referral marketing, and provides building blocks of ideas versus a quick 1,2,3 do this plan. It builds on these building blocks to show you how to create a system that once established cannot be stopped.</p>
<p>If you need to step up your game with your business  or practice this  would be one of your best reads of the year. It gives you the theory, the practice and paints a clear picture for you. Can&#8217;t ask more than that.</p>
